SS 420 Plates are high-carbon martensitic stainless steel plates that offer significantly higher hardness and strength compared to Grade 410. Often referred to as "tool steel" stainless, Grade 420 contains a minimum of 12% chromium, which provides sufficient corrosion resistance for industrial applications, but its standout feature is its exceptional hardenability. When subjected to quenching and tempering, these plates can reach a Rockwell hardness of up to 50 HRC, making them the primary choice for components subjected to high abrasive wear and mechanical stress.

Manufactured in compliance with ASTM A240 and ASME SA240, SS 420 plates are best utilized in the hardened and polished condition to achieve maximum corrosion resistance. They are highly effective against fresh water, alkalis, air, and certain food acids, which is why they are a staple in the production of surgical instruments, industrial shear blades, and high-precision molds. While the material is less ductile than austenitic grades, it offers a unique combination of stainless properties and high-strength mechanical performance, ensuring long-term edge retention and structural stability in demanding manufacturing environments.
