Nickel 201 (UNS N02201) Plates are the low-carbon modification of Nickel 200, specifically engineered for applications where exposure to temperatures exceeding 315°C (600°F) is required. Produced under the ASTM B162 specification, Nickel 201 limits carbon content to a maximum of 0.02%. This critical adjustment prevents the formation of intergranular graphite (graphitization) at elevated temperatures, which would otherwise lead to severe embrittlement and material failure in standard nickel grades. As a commercially pure wrought alloy, it retains the exceptional corrosion resistance of its counterpart while providing enhanced thermal stability up to 600°C (1100°F).
The primary industrial advantage of ASTM B162 Nickel 201 is its unmatched performance in high-temperature caustic environments. It is the definitive material of choice for caustic soda evaporators and chemical reactors where purity and structural integrity are paramount. Beyond its chemical resistance, Nickel 201 is slightly softer than Nickel 200, offering superior ductility that facilitates complex cold-forming and deep-drawing operations. Its high thermal and electrical conductivity, combined with low magnetostriction, makes it highly effective for electronic components, aerospace heat shields, laboratory equipment, and synthetic fiber production.
