SS 310S Plates are the low-carbon version of Grade 310, specifically engineered to provide enhanced weldability and reduced susceptibility to embrittlement during prolonged service at high temperatures. The "S" designation indicates a controlled carbon content (maximum 0.08%), which significantly minimizes carbide precipitation in the heat-affected zone during welding. This characteristic ensures that the plates maintain their structural integrity and intergranular corrosion resistance, even when fabricated into complex thermal processing equipment such as fluidized bed combustors and lead pots.

Produced under ASTM A240 and ASME SA240 standards, SS 310S plates offer identical oxidation resistance to Grade 310, performing reliably in continuous service up to 1150°C. These plates are highly sought after in the petrochemical and environmental industries for their ability to withstand moderate carburizing and thermal cycling without scaling. Their austenitic structure also provides remarkable toughness at cryogenic temperatures, making SS 310S a dual-purpose material for extreme thermal ranges, from the intense heat of industrial kilns to the freezing conditions of liquefied gas storage.

SS 310S Plates Features

  • » Low Carbon Advantage: The "S" variant features a reduced carbon content (0.08% max) which significantly decreases carbide precipitation during welding, ensuring superior joint integrity.
  • » Extreme Oxidation Resistance: Capable of resisting oxidation in continuous service at temperatures up to 1150°C, provided the environment is free from reducing sulfur gases.
  • » High-Temperature Strength: Retains significant mechanical strength and creep resistance at elevated temperatures, making it a reliable choice for structural furnace components.
  • » Austenitic Stability: The high nickel and chromium matrix maintains a stable austenitic structure, ensuring the plate remains non-magnetic and tough across a wide thermal spectrum.
  • » Enhanced Weldability: Optimized for fabrication, 310S can be welded using standard methods like TIG, MIG, and submerged arc welding without the high risk of hot cracking.
  • » Thermal Shock Resistance: Excellent ability to withstand rapid temperature fluctuations and thermal cycling, which is critical for equipment like flare tips and heat treatment muffles.
  • » Cryogenic Toughness: Maintains remarkable impact strength and ductility even in extreme sub-zero conditions, offering versatility beyond high-heat applications.
  • » Corrosion Resistance: Provides better resistance to carburizing and moderate-sulfidizing atmospheres than standard stainless steel grades like 304 or 316.
