SS 409 Plates are titanium-stabilized ferritic stainless steel plates primarily designed for applications where functional durability and resistance to atmospheric corrosion are prioritized over aesthetic appearance. Classified as a "utility" grade, Grade 409 provides significantly better oxidation and corrosion resistance than carbon steel and some coated steels, making it an economically viable solution for harsh environments. The titanium addition serves as a stabilizing agent that prevents sensitization and subsequent intergranular corrosion that can occur in the heat-affected zones during welding.

Produced in accordance with ASTM A240 and ASME SA240, SS 409 plates are the industry benchmark for automotive exhaust systems, including mufflers, catalytic converters, and tailpipes. While the material may develop a light surface discoloration or "patina" when exposed to high heat or moisture, it maintains its structural integrity and resists scaling at continuous temperatures up to 675°C. These plates offer excellent formability and weldability, allowing them to be easily fabricated into complex shapes for industrial equipment, agricultural machinery, and furnace components where a cost-effective, heat-resistant material is required.
