Duplex Steel 329 Sheet & Plate (UNS S32900) is one of the earliest developed duplex grades, characterized by its high chromium and low nickel content. This specific alloying strategy results in a material that provides exceptional resistance to chloride-induced stress corrosion cracking (SCC) and pitting. As a dual-phase stainless steel, Grade 329 combines the strength of the ferritic phase with the corrosion resistance of the austenitic phase, making it significantly more robust than standard 300-series austenitic stainless steels in aggressive industrial environments.

Produced in accordance with ASTM A240 and ASME SA240, these plates are particularly effective in oxidizing environments and applications involving high concentrations of chlorides. Its high yield strength—nearly double that of 316L—allows for more efficient, thinner-walled designs in high-pressure systems. Common applications for Duplex 329 sheets include heat exchangers, pump parts, and valve components in chemical processing and marine engineering, where long-term resistance to erosion and localized corrosion is essential for maintaining operational uptime.

Duplex Steel 329 Sheet & Plate Features

  • » Outstanding SCC Resistance: Specifically engineered to resist chloride-induced stress corrosion cracking, making it far more reliable than 304 or 316 stainless steels in hot chloride environments.
  • » High Chromium Content: The high Cr level (up to 28%) provides exceptional resistance to oxidizing acids and high-temperature oxidation.
  • » Superior Mechanical Strength: Offers significantly higher yield strength compared to standard austenitic grades, enabling the fabrication of high-pressure components with reduced wall thickness.
  • » Enhanced Pitting Resistance: Provides excellent protection against localized pitting and crevice corrosion, particularly in brackish water and industrial cooling systems.
  • » Excellent Wear and Erosion Resistance: The hard, dual-phase microstructure resists mechanical wear and erosion, making it ideal for pump impellers and high-velocity fluid applications.
  • » Good Thermal Conductivity: Features a higher rate of heat transfer than austenitic steels, which improves efficiency in heat exchangers and condensers.
  • » Intergranular Corrosion Protection: The balanced chemistry and controlled processing ensure high resistance to intergranular attack even after welding.
  • » Proven Performance in Marine Media: Highly effective for marine hardware and subsea components where exposure to seawater requires a robust, high-strength material.
